The First of Many....(Hopefully)

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing ( let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson for winning the Bojangles’ Southern 500 Saturday night. The win also gave Hendrick Motorsports win number 200. Jimmie Johnson has bounced back from the enormous points hole after to Daytona and is currently 5th in points. Hendrick Motorsports has been a class organization from day one. Friends that work at HMS never have a bad thing to say about the place and there seems to be minimal turnover, which normally points to a strong management team and great work environment. Mr. Hendrick made a comment to Jimmie saying now let’s go get 250. One has to love that mentality and it shows why they have been so successful over the years in NASCAR.

The more interesting story, and one that wasn’t really seen in depth during the broadcast, was the post race issues with Kurt Busch & Ryan Newman. Busch did a burnout out of his pit box late in the race expressing a little frustration. The issue was the fact that Busch went thru Newman’s pit box also with crew members still over the wall. Newman’s crew did not appreciate this act and wanted to express their displeasure to Busch directly and immediately after the race. Both drivers were summoned to the NASCAR hauler after the race, but Newman & crew were clearly upset over Busch’s actions. It will be very interesting to see what happen next week during a non-points race with $1 Million on the line.

Matt Kuchar won The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Sunday. Kuchar shot a two under 70 on Sunday to win by two strokes over 4 others. Rickie Fowler was one of the four and had a chance to put a little pressure on Kuchar by birding the 18th, but he missed the putt, essentially locking things up for Kuchar. Fowler was trying to become the first player since David Toms to win back-to-back after the first win on Tour. Kuchar was the first American to win since Phil Mickelson at The Players. The Top Ten Players in the world have 6 Americans there for the first time in a long time (although the Top 3 are not) and as was mentioned during Sunday’s final round, Davis Love III has to like that for the Ryder Cup this fall. As with last week, seeing the camaraderie of the young American players congratulating each other both at the course and on Twitter is very refreshing to see.

What was a bit troublesome to see Sunday was the heckling Kevin Na faced. Na’s issues with the waggles were very well chronicled on television this weekend, but some idiots on Sunday went too far. Booing, chanting, and yelling at Na, were all things the 54-hole leader faced during his round Sunday. There is some etiquette in the game of golf and obviously these morons didn’t get that memo on Sunday. Na took things with a grain of salt, which was also nice to see, but sad that it was even an issue on Sunday.

RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM THE PAST WEEK

· Texas Rangers’ Josh Hamilton is putting up some incredible numbers this season. If he is able to stay healthy this season, there is no telling what he could put up.

· Two game sevens in the NBA playoffs and both L.A. teams won them. That was the good news. The bad news is I don’t see either team winning their next series versus Oklahoma City (Lakers) or San Antonio (Clippers).

· I know the defense picks up in the NBA playoffs, but officials still need to call fouls. The game doesn’t have 100 points scored on a regular basis any longer, but having games with scores in the 30’s at halftime is sad. There is no other word to describe it. The best players in the world can only score that many points, to me, says there is a bigger issue that needs addressing.

· Is the Big 3 in Miami really the Big 3? Wade & James are definitely stars, but Bosh? Not in my eyes.

· With T. Suggs & D. Bowers each suffering a torn Achilles tendon already, it is easy to ask if these were freak accidents or signs of a bigger issue. Are guys really giving their bodies rest in the off-season or continuously training? These guys go so hard for at least 17 weeks that their bodies need some time to recover. Just a thought.

· The Devils and Rangers will face each other in the NHL Eastern Conference Finals. This has to be nice for everyone involved. Only 8 miles apart, this will have to be a very intense series.

Is every game really no more important than another?

Coaches like to say no game is more important than another, but their actions late in seasons don't always reflect that.

UFC 145 is this weekend. My main event prediction.

Dana White should teach others about Social Media.

NHL Playoffs better or worse with new teams beating traditional powers?

Another NCAA rule needs changing
