Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

Wednesday’s are normally a pretty uneventful day in the sports world, but today was a major exception to that thought. There were some rumors of a Randy Moss trade Tuesday evening and some reports that it was on-off-on-off….so I went to sleep. I wake up this morning and am on the way to my first appointment when official word come down that Moss was traded back to the Vikings for a 3rd round draft pick in 2011 and a 7th round pick in2012. There are several interesting aspects of this happening at this point of the season. The first one is Randy Moss, a #1 receiver, is only worth a 3rd round pick? Would Chris Johnson or AP be worth a second rounder then? The NFL has most things right, but the fact that a kid that was a top 10 draft pick and has never done a thing in the league is making more money than a proven entity is one. This compensation also implies that draft picks are more important to some than a proven entity. My second thought is what Tom Brady and Wes Welker think of this move. Brady and Moss had a magical season a couple years ago and having Moss on the other side of the field has definitely opened things up for Welker. I am almost certain Welker now becomes a focal point of a defense (which I don’t appreciate for my Fantasy team) and teams may play more press coverage without the worry of a deep threat in Moss. My guess is the team has seen some things in Brandon Tate and/or other players on the team to make this move more doable. Maybe there were some chemistry issues that no one outside of the locker room has been alerted of. For the Vikings, one has to think this is the move Brett Favre was pressing for. It should also help AP (Fantasy) in creating more room in the box with Moss on the outside stretching a defense. Week 8 should be interesting when the Patriots and Vikings match up.
Roy Halladay decided he wanted to make is post season debut memorable and he damn well did that today with only the second no-hitter in post season history ( Don Larsen). I was on my way to meet a friend for dinner and as I was walking into the establishment, everyone was in the bar area, men and women, watching the last three outs. Halladay made a comment in the spring that coming to the Phillies was something he wanted to do so that he could win a ring. Halladay had all of his pitches working today, especially his changeup, which he even admitted was off and on over the last month of the season. The Phillies have been playing much better baseball over the last 90 days, and as much as I would love to see Bobby Cox win a World Title on his way to retirement, I am not sure anyone in the NL has anything for the Phillies.

OTHER RANDOM THOUGHTS
  • Word coming out of Redskins Park is Clinton Portis may have played his last game as a Redskin last week. Portis is said to be out 4-6 weeks with a groin injury that won’t require surgery, but any groin injury to a RB is a big deal.
  •
  • Julius Peppers said that that there was a’ “little sour,” taste left in Carolina from how things went down last season. I am by no means a Panthers apologist, but I do think the Panthers tried to make Julius the highest paid defensive player in the league twice and with the franchise tag last year, made him the highest paid player in the NFL last season. Peppers’ camp also made a trade request the season before feeling like he was be hampered from reaching his full potential. Maybe the Panthers were granting his wish a year later than he requested and decided that if they didn’t have anything good to say to Julius, then to say nothing at all.
  •
  • Europe won the Ryder Cup. Greg Biffle won the race at Kansas. When did the events air on TV? Was there something else on I may have been watching? Just a little hint to NASCAR and PGA TOUR……
  •
  • The Miami Heat Big 3 were on the court all of three minutes before Wade pulled up with a gimpy hamstring. I am going to go out on a limb and say this may be the beginning of some major issues in South Florida. I will call this a tropical wave that could develop into a major hurricane to put into terms those in South Florida can understand.
  •
  • UFC has set up another month of back-to-back weekends of action. Next weekend, October 16th, is UFC 120 on Spike TV from London and the following weekend UFC 121 from Anaheim. Two great cards that will be discussed over the next couple of weeks. Same format for November 13 & 20....
