Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

WHY WE NEED NFL FOOTBALL

FANTASY FOOTBALL !!

So Julius Peppers decides to actually play at some point this past weekend, and takes out my fantasy football team’s second string quarterback Matthew Stafford. The S.O.B. has one freakin’ tackle in the entire game, which also was a sack and forced fumble, but makes ONE play, in the entire game and takes out my guy! Thanks a lot Mr. Peppers, I guess all of the criticizing of your play the last few seasons, this is how you chose to pay me back?!?!?!?

Now I know Peppers was not thinking of me, but as an owner of two fantasy football teams, this is how we all think. All of us that play fantasy football, we look at our players and take many things very personal. Philip Rivers throws for 298 yards and I lose one of my games by three points. Had he thrown a touchdown on that last drive, I would have won that game. Ryan Grant is out on IR after injuring his ankle, so I am looking for a new running back. This is the new NFL. I was watching the Panthers-Giants game Sunday at the Rusty Rudder in Cornelius Sunday and many of us were as concerned about who was scoring in other games as we were the Panthers game. The great game Wes Welker was having was not lost on this guy! Fantasy Football is so big now, that DIRECTV has set up a Fantasy tracker where NFL Sunday Ticket Subscribers can add up to 18 players to follow.  They also are providing big play alerts when a selected player makes an important play.

People who think that fantasy football is not important to its players should come to a live draft. We have eight players in one league and there were seven players with laptops at our draft. There is always a lot of trash talking when guys select players that are injured, not very good, or just selected too early. Playing in a golf tournament Monday, a friend mentioned that in one of his drafts, a guy took a tight end and a kicker as his first two draft picks. Please notice that also, many of us are in multiple leagues.

If this doesn’t prove to you how big Fantasy Football is, take a look at 10:30 PM Thursday evening on FX. There is a show called, The League, that is completely about fantasy football. Last year’s season was one of the funniest things on television and looking at the previews, this first episode revolves around their draft taking place in Las Vegas.

So on top of everything we do to get our teams ready every week by looking at matchups, scouring the waiver wires, looking for this year’s Miles Austin, there is a sitcom that focuses on fantasy football. THIS IS WHY THERE HAD BETTER NOT BE A LOKOUT NEXT YEAR!! What the hell would I do with all of that time?

OTHER THOUGHTS FROM THE WEEKEND
How bad is the ACC? James Madison wins in Blacksburg at Lane Stadium, Georgia Tech travels to Kansas to get beat by a team that lost the week prior at home to N. Dakota State. These were the major surprises, but Miami’s loss at Ohio State and Florida State’s poor performance at Oklahoma did nothing to help out the conference’s reputation around the country. This was supposed to be the year the ACC regained so National Prominence, but it is looking like the same ACC of the past few seasons. This weekend, Clemson travels to Auburn, Wake Forest goes out to Stanford, Maryland travels to West Virginia, Virginia Tech hosts East Carolina, Florida State hosts BYU and Duke turns into Tuscaloosa North by hosting #1 Alabama. Hopefully these teams can go 4-2 in these games, as anything worse will be a huge disappointment. The disappointment will not be completely in this weekend, but in the Conference’s overall out of conference play this season.

A few notes from the NFL this past weekend:

Brett Favre needed preseason reps than he thought.

Calvin Johnson was robbed of a touchdown and the Lions were robbed of a victory. I don’t care what the rules say, but we all know that is true.

Wes Welker had knee surgery 8 months ago??

Jake Delhomme had a flash back to last season while in Tampa over the weekend. He has now completed more passes to Tampa DB’s than Brown’s receivers.

Matt Moore needs to learn sometimes three rows into the stands is a good play. Everyone wanting to see Jimmy Clausen had better be careful because you may get what you were asking for.

Mendenhall is making the Steeler fans say Big Ben who?

The Colts are still searching for a defensive identity.

The Packers are pretty good, and Michael Vick is trying to create a QB controversy in Philadelphia.

Really Seahawks?? Really 49ers???

I HATE ALEX BARRON. While the Boys did play horribly, damn that was just stupid at the end of the game…Hey J.G., RUN THE BALL SOME…IT WORKS !!!

Ray Lewis is still one of the baddest men in the NFL.

And finally for the week….
Philip Rivers…..I take a State guy in my fantasy league and you screw me…and that is why I hate NC State. 298 yards, could you not get just two more and maybe complete a pass late in the game? He never won anything in college and is traveling down the same road in the NFL.

IT ALL COMES BACK TO FANTASY FOOTBALL !!
