Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

The last few weeks have been extremely amazing in so many ways. There have been so many sports stories that I feel bad for not commenting on some as time as gone along. I know I can not get them all, but will try to get a couple in this blog.

Brett Favre- Did anyone really think he wasn’t coming back ?? The question now is will he stay healthy and play an entire season. Word coming out of Vikings camp is he is already taking shots in that ankle.

Steven Strasburg- Feel horrible for the phenom, but according to some experts regarding his throwing motion, this surgery was inevitable. 12-18 months to recover, but many think he may come back stronger than ever….or will he be Mark Pryor?

Carolina Panthers- The defense was supposed to be the unit with question marks while the offense carried the team early. Well, it appears as if the roles will be reversed at least early on. The eternal search for a # 2 receiver seems to be ongoing. Week one opening the new Giants Stadium could be a matchup between two teams with many questions to be answered.

Kyle Busch is a driving machine. Winning all three series races last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway was super impressive. He has tried several times before, but never quite made it until last weekend. Will this give him momentum going into the Chase now? Many around the 18 have talked about his maturity and how much he has grown as a driver this year. I think he may be the guy, other than his # 11 teammate, with the best chance to knock the #48 off his throne.

PGA Championship- 2017 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Major Kudos to everyone that helped make this happen. The biggest question for many around the Charlotte area is what is going to happen to the Wachovia/Quail Hollow/ Wells Fargo Championship after 2014? Johnny Harris confirmed that the contract for the current event, which has been a re-entry point for many top players after Augusta, is only contractually set thru 2014. What happens after 2014 is anyone’s guess but Harris added there certainly won't be a PGA Tour event in 2016-17 at Quail as the course transitions from playing in over seed rye for the Spring event to Bermuda grass for the heat of the summer. Harris also expects to rebuild all 18 greens (something Phil Mickelson has advised) with a new type of bent grass more resistant to the intense heat Charlotte experiences in late August. Some other changes, such as a new fan entrance and some widening of roads will be explored before then.

Marcus Jordan- Well, if I ran up a $35,000 tab at a Las Vegas nightclub TODAY, I would be in a world of trouble on so many levels. Now had I done that at 19, I would have still been in a lot of trouble, but that could have included some legal issues. The Nevada Gaming Control Board seems to think that this is something they need to look into.   According to Jordan’s tweets from August 20th, "Last night was stupid... 35K at Haze, Totals 50K something the whole day." I am sure I have not spent that much combined on all my trips to Sin City. While I understand that big MJ can afford these spending sprees, I am certain this is not the image he wants for his kids or appears as if he condones this behavior….although he may understand it. While Marcus may be able to skate by, I am not sure about Haze nightclub in Aria. Pretty good promotion for the club!

North Carolina- This is the one I have been holding off on until more facts were released. However, it doesn’t appear that those facts are any closer to being released than they were when the initial probe began. The initial probe seemed to involve Marvin Austin and Greg Little and a Miami trip earlier this spring. Austin was also tweeting about some other things that seem to raise the NCAA’s interest into his activities. At some point along the way, some questions about some academic issues were raised and the latest investigation began. I am a diehard fan, but things just do not look good from someone on the outside looking in. Word is there are 7-9 players, mainly on defense, involved in, “Nannygate.” There are rumors that she may have had a relationship with some players while possibly assisting on some school work. Again, these are all rumors out there and nothing has been confirmed by any party involved. I am not sure how things are going to play out, but hopefully there will be some level of resolution before this weekend’s game in Atlanta versus LSU.

I guess I have to place a couple picks here for Thursday nights college games.

Southern Miss +13.5  @South Carolina
@ Hawaii +21.5 vs. Southen California
@ Ohio State -28.5  vs. Marshall
Pitt +3 @ Utah
