Thursday marks the start of the NBA Finals (after about a month of down time between all these series) between the Celtics and Lakers. The Lakers were expected to be here, but playing either the Magic or Cavaliers, not the Celtics. The Celtics beat the Heat( D Wade), Cavaliers (LeBron) and the Magic (D. Howard) on their way to the Finals. The Lakers went thru Oklahoma City, Utah and Phoenix on their road to the Finals.
Predictions are always dangerous, so let me make mine. The first thing I will say is I hate the 2-3-2 series rotation. The Lakers HAVE to win both games in L.A. or risk not coming back west this season. How is that home court advantage? I understand not wanting a lot of down time and cross country travel, but if it works to go 2-2-1-1-1 in every other series, why change it for the Finals? Secondly, I think the way the officials call the game will determine a lot also. Loosely called games favor the Celtics while tighter games favor the Lakers. All things being said, this series, to me, will come down to the role players. I think the Lakers have a slight edge here and predict the Lakers win another title in six games.
OTHER THOUGHTS FROM THE NOGGIN
After watching a few holes of the nine-hole skins game at the Memorial, Tiger Woods will not finish in the Top 10 this week. I did not think he would make the cut, but saw enough decent shots to think he should at least be around for the weekend. He was unable to hit shots into good scoring positions and missed quite a few greens Wednesday, but scrambled well enough to score and win a few holes.
JIM JOYCE WILL BE THE LAST STRAW THAT BRINGS REPLAY TO BASEBALL. That missed call was absolutely atrocious and the thing that makes it even worse to me, he says once HE SAW THE REPLAY, he knew he had made the wrong call. That error cost a 22 year old kid a perfect game. Now if baseball had replay, and if the official could see the error he had made on the screen over the outfield, would that have slowed down the game too much? The technology is there and used in almost every other sport, so why not take advantage of this to make your game that much better. I would like to hear someone in MLB offices explain to Armando Galarraga why replay is not used now. Of all the things that could happen on the heels of the Joe West issues, this is the last thing baseball needed, but hopefully will get the sport in tune with technology.
Ken Griffey, at 630 Homers, announced his retirement. Where was he supposedly playing this season?
Congrats to my Tar Heel’s Baseball team making the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Many have argued that they should not be there since they could not even make the ACC Tourney, a point hard to debate. Hopefully the Heels can make some noise in the tourney and prove the doubters wrong.
Congratulations to Mr. Ashley Judd AKA Dario Franchitti for winning his second Indy 500. He has to be much happier with his decision to move back to Indy Car after a brief NASCAR stint. Many in the NASCAR garage that I am friends with miss Ashley’s presence in the garage area on race day.
Kurt Busch pulls the double in winning the All-Star race and Coke 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Busch is making some noise now in the points standing and trying to regain the title for best Busch brother in the field. I have not seen Kurt pull a move to upset Jeff Burton.
