Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

  • The rumored card for UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31st in North Carolina is beginning to take shape. According to MMAjunkie.com, the rumored card is:
  •  Kenny Florian vs. Takanori Gomi*
  • Nate Quarry vs. Jorge Rivera*
  • Lucio Linhares vs. Yushin Okami*
  • Cole Miller vs. Andre Winner*
  • Ross Pearson vs. Dennis Siver*
  • Gleison Tibau vs. Caol Uno*
For UFC fans, there are several well-known fighters on this card and it is looking like a very entertaining card. Since Fayetteville hosted the tribute for the troops, the best guess is either Raleigh or Charlotte as the host city for the event. The UFC has pretty much confirmed the event will take place in North Carolina, but a venue has not been decided upon. Still holding out hope for Charlotte as the host.
  • So the Cardinals, Ravens, Cowboys, and Chargers seasons all ended last weekend. According to their respective playoff seedings, the Chargers should be the biggest surprise, but that is not the case for everyone. With the exception of the Ravens, a case for why the Cardinals, Cowboys and Chargers should have won their games could have been made. The Cardinals has momentum on their side after the overtime victory at home versus the Packers last week. The Saints had played their last three regular season games looking like the Aints. New Orleans started off a little sluggish, but once things got going, Reggie Bush and the offense of the Saints looked like the intimidating offense from early in the season.
  • The Cowboys were the hottest team playing. After ending the Saints undefeated season in New Orleans and following that up with back-to-back shutouts at Washington and versus Philadelphia, the Cowboys then blasted the Eagles again. The Vikings came into the game 1-2 in their last three regular season games, with the lone win against a Giants team that appeared to have shut it down. Brett Favre decided to play one of is best games EVER against the Cowboys and the offensive line of the Cowboys decided not to make the trip to the Metrodome last weekend. Offensive Line play is where it all begins and once the Vikings defensive line began to control things, it was lights out for the Cowboys and their season. A good season, but not how many wanted things to end.
  • The Chargers were the team many thought would challenge the Colts. The only problem with that is no one told this to the Jets. Watching that game Sunday, the longer the Jets kept it a one possession game, the more and more likely a Jets win became. Oh yeah, this Darrelle Revis kid, he IS the only shut down corner in the NFL. Revis had one of the more spectacular plays with an interception in the second half that lead to a Jets score and a victory over the Chargers.
  • So this weekend we have Jets at Colts in game one Sunday afternoon. Strength versus Strength in this game with the Colts offense battling the Jets defense. Again, the belief is the longer the Jets can keep this a one score game, the more potential for a Jets victory. The offense of the Jets is not designed to score quickly should they need to come from behind. Gut feeling is Peyton Manning will be playing in his Second Super Bowl in Miami in two weeks against…..
  • Vikings at Saints in the nightcap. Brees versus Favre. City of destiny versus man on a mission. Can the Vikings defensive line have a repeat performance on the road where they have not played as well this season? Can the Saints defense slow down Favre in a way the Cowboys could not? At the end of the day, is it going to be Favre or Brees playing in Miami? Favre vs. Manning has to be a dream for CBS? That is where my money is for this weekend. This being said, look for Sanchez versus Brees in Miami, based on selections this post season.
  • I will address the UNC Basketball team at a later time. All that can be said to fans from another team 8 miles down the road is that those fans should not cast stones while living in your glass house.
