Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

  • The Tiger Woods Saga seems to be growing versus going away. Everyday, there seems to be a new cocktail waitress come out and confess to allegedly having a “relationship” with Tiger. Where will the alleged number end ….10,15,20?? At some point sponsors had to step up and make a comment. Gatorade was the first. Gatorade says the Tigerade Gatorade will be discontinued as of December 26, saying "We made the decision several months ago ... our relationship with Tiger continues.''  Gatorade was the first sponsor to make any comment and now will others follow? This may be the least of any issues Tiger is dealing with at Christmas. There is talk Tiger may do Oprah now. Tiger Woods, for someone who values his privacy, has had his entire life literally blow up in front of himself and the entire world. Items he tried so passionately adamantly to keep out of the public eye are now front and center daily for all to see and discuss. All of the information that is out seems to lead everyone to believe that Tiger essentially had 2 lives: the one we all thought we knew about involving golf and family and the other only his closest confidants and best friends knew of involving everything but his family allegedly. People are now questioning how all of this will affect his golf game, once he comes back out and joins the PGA Tour. There will inevitably be questions about his personal life, which he will surely try and avoid. Hecklers will now possibly have a way of getting into his head, something many thought was impossible. While there is so much talk about Tiger and his golf game, what about his wife, Elin, and their two children and the repercussions all of this will have on them?

  • Danica Patrick has made it official and will be driving the #7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series and Daytona ARCA race February 6th for JR Motorsports in 2010 & 2011.  While the IndyCar Series will be the #1 priority for Danica with the 17 races in that series, the Nationwide Series will be the one most closely scrutinized. It is believed Danica will only run a dozen or fewer races this upcoming Nationwide Series season. Some believe that this may be a test for a potential move to the Cup Series in 2012. The question now is will the audition be for the # 5 car or the # 88? Wouldn’t be ironic if Danica took over for the guy that gave her the break into this sport! Now the question is who has more wins in NASCAR next year, Danica or Junior?

RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM THE WEEK
  • Tim Tebow should not be a finalist for the Heisman this year. It is not a lifetime achievement award, unless something has changed. CJ Spiller deserved to be the 5th finalist. Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska is the guy that should win, but most likely Colt McCoy will be the winner. The only fear is that those two guys will split votes in Middle America and possibly open up the window for Mark Ingram of Alabama
  •
  • Dallas OT Flozell Adams has been fined $50,000 for his late cheap shot Sunday versus the New York Giants. It was uncalled for and the man, who is the most penalized in the league, is going to hurt his team more than he assists it eventually. Hopefully, it is not during the remaining part of the 2009 season.
