Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

  • There is not much I can say about the Panthers’ performance this past week that is positive. The Panthers’ offense generated as many points as the Jets’ defense did. Jake threw four more interceptions, Steve Smith had only one reception and after the opening drive, neither Williams nor Stewart could do much running the ball. The lone bright spot from this game was the defense. Two forced fumbles and an interception were generated by the defense, but the offense could only generate two field goals. Watching the game on television, there seemed to be little to no energy at the Meadowlands for this game. Seven turnovers and 23 combined points (12 teams scored at least 24 points  on their own this weekend) do not scream excitement. Coming to Bank of America Stadium this weekend is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-10) and the question now turns to how many people show up this weekend. The season is at that point where weather (49 and partly cloudy forecast for Sunday) can play an issue in attendance and the shopping card comes into play now. The Panthers are not providing a lot of entertainment currently with the product they are placing on the field, and with the Bucs coming to town, there are not many, if any, good storylines for the game this weekend. Hopefully at kickoff Sunday, the stadium does not look like it does at halftime of most games. If it does, what will the stadium look like at halftime?

  • It appears the Delhomme will be benched this week with a broken finger and replaced by Matt Moore. Moose thinks one of Moore’s best attributes is his ability to throw the deep ball. Do the Panthers test the Bucs young secondary more than they have the last few weeks with deep passes? Do the Panthers maybe show a little more Wildcat formation this week?   Moore is in his 3rd year and this could be an audition, if not for the Panthers, then the rest of the league.

  • Tiger Woods was cited for careless driving, fined $164 and four points against his license. Once this case was closed by the FHP, he admitted to some transgressions and letting his family down. Tiger values his privacy more than most athletes and has faced intense scrutiny the last few days from media outlets outside his norm. ESPN, The Golf Channel, and a few select others have working relationships with Tiger and have handled things in a manner that would not inhibit that relationship from continuing in the future. These entities have rules to follow and have done sow while reporting on this matter. However, neither TMZ nor US Weekly have working relationships with Tiger and most definitely will not in the future after the events of the last week. These outlets have sniffed, prodded, and done everything possible to find out if there was something else to the story, which there was. These entities could work with a “win at all cost,” mentality when trying to get the scoop on this story. Tiger was wrong in what he did, and has to face his wife, family, and sponsors to explain to them what happened, apologize and try to regain their trust.  That will be far worse than anything anyone on the outside can say or write about him. The image has been tarnished, but to what extent has yet to be determined. Now that Tiger has admitted to doing something many speculated on, this story will most likely fade out over the next week in the mainstream media. There is at least one person that hopes so.

  • The Charlie Weis era is over at Notre Dame.  As he said at his introductory press conference, 6 wins does not cut it for the Notre Dame football program.  Rumors of Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops leaving Florida and Oklahoma respectively make no sense. Why would a coach at either school leave to go to Notre Dame? Notre Dame is not the football factory they were twenty years ago.  Why go from being a big fish in a big pond (SEC, Big 12) to a big fish in no pond?  Any move to South Bend by either coach makes no sense.
