Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

  •      The 4-5 Panthers are only one game out of a potential wild-card spot with the 4-5 Dolphins coming to town Thursday evening. Ronnie Brown was placed on IR by the Dolphins, so Ricky Williams will be taking the load of carries.  It will be very interesting to see how the Panthers offensive line replaces Jordan Gross for the remainder of the season. Both teams need this win to remain in the Wild-Card picture. Many games over the next two weeks should help begin to clarify the potential playoff picture. Wonder if Dan Henning may have a little extra hop in his step in preparing for this game?

  • Looking forward to heading to New York City Thursday to see some basketball at MadisonSquareGarden. This trip may not have been a go had my Tar Heels not been playing, but that is another story for another day.  OhioState is the opponent Thursday evening and Friday they will play either Syracuse or California. All four schools are ranked in the Top 25 and hopefully they will all be great games.

  • If there are any more Monday night NFL games like the thriller between Baltimore and Cleveland, sitcoms or wrestling may become choice # 1.  That game was unwatchable by many, even Cleveland fans, as evident of the empty seats at the stadium.  After watching the game Sunday evening between the Patriots and Colts, it is very clear to see the differences between the good and the very bad. This season seems to have very few good teams and many bad teams.

  • It is very refreshing to hear announcers criticize the product they are broadcasting. Every sporting event cannot live up to the excitement level produced by the Colts-Patriots Sunday evening.  NASCAR was unhappy with some comments made about the product at Talladega a few weeks ago.  If announcers are not allowed to speak openly and freely about what they are witnessing, then what are they really trying to communicate to viewers at home. Steve Young during the Monday Night wrap-up on ESPN, mentioned how unwatchable the game was and how disorganized the Cleveland franchise seems to be. ESPN hired Young to give his opinions and that is what he was doing. Hopefully the NFL does not follow NASCAR’s path and ask Young to pull back on his criticism.

  • Sunday night’s game, 4th and 2 on the 28, I would have punted and made Manning drive 65+ yards versus giving him a short field. I love to take risks, but that is not the place to do that. What would the fall out have been had that been Wade Phillips or Norv Turner instead of Bill Belichick?
