Who's Coggins?

Ben Coggins

We all know what they say about opinions and this will be the place to catch mine. I will tell everyone upfront, I am a member of two of the most annoying fan bases out there: UNC and The Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy almost all major sports, especially golfing (let me know if you want to tee it up sometime) and may throw some course reviews in here. I will give my point of view on things going on in the world of sports and please let me know what you like and dislike. Feel free to contact me at ben@southernsportsjournal.net anytime.

  • Congrats to the New York Yankees and all of their fans for winning or buying their 27th World Championship. It all depends on who you are a fan of. Many “purist,” do not like how much the Yankees spend, but others applaud the willingness to do it takes to win Championships. That desire to win at all costs is what makes the Yankees so attractive to so many players. Some people hate winners for the sake of hating and this is where many fall when looking at this organization. 27 times the Yankees have won it all and now all they are thinking about is how to get 28. The greatest thing heard during the victory parade was the thanking of Kate Hudson !

  • 2 Tackles, One Sack, Forced Fumble and Interception for Touchdown. This is Julius Peppers’ stat line from the Panther’s victory last weekend in Arizona. This is the Peppers everyone expects to see on a weekly basis. Peppers’ play has turned around ever since a pre-game speech he gave in Tampa. In this speech, he said he was not happy at his performance looking back at tape and was going to play like he is capable of playing weekly.  Should Mr. Peppers (you get Mr. status with that stat line) continue playing this way, he will earn his money. He is now showing what many thought he was capable of doing, now continuing to perform at this level on a weekly basis is the goal. Do that and no one, self included, can say a negative thing about Peppers, except where was this earlier this season? As the saying goes, better late than never. The main question now is can the team build on the momentum that have after this road victory and shock the league with a win at New Orleans? New Orleans is coming in off a short week, big Monday night win at home versus Atlanta, and lots of talk this week about a perfect season should they be able to get past New England November 30th. The Panthers have traditionally played well against New Orleans and hopefully this week is no different.

  • Unreal, is the only word I can use to describe the New Mexico-BYU women’s Mountain West Conference soccer tournament. Here is a link to the video if you have not seen it yet:     http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4628040&categoryid=2378529. My other thought is how did this happen so often in this game without any penalties or cards?  In high school basketball, it always seemed as if the girl’s games were much more physical than our boy’s games, and this shows soccer may be that way also. New Mexico athletic programs have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. Maybe sportsmanship is a class that needs to be added to the curriculum here, for both players and coaches.
