Perception vs. Reality
If a stranger walked up and asked ten of your friends five questions about you and your personality, do you think the answers would come in pretty close or completely different? I would think if that happened with my friends, they would say relatively the same things: nice, fun, smartass, aggressive, etc. As much as this may not be good, I tend to act pretty much the same all the time, only having to be serious when I absolutely have to be serious. The one thing I am almost certain that my friends won’t call me is fake. If I am upset with you or not wanting to do something, everyone will be able to see it in my face. I wear my emotions on my sleeve. This is not true of everyone, especially some in sports. Juan Pablo Montoya was doing some planned interviews with different stations and evidentially, he was told it would go till 5 PM. Well, as things of this nature often do, they ran a little over, but Montoya was not having any more of it. The Sacramento Fox affiliate, KTXL, was the last station and began recording Montoya as the anchor was readying for the interview. Well, Montoya looked at his watch and said “5:01, I’m done,” several times. You can watch the video here:
http://www.fox40.com/videobeta/watch/?watch=027b811e-6268-4c76-b8eb-a0bfc822efd2&src=front . The anchor has this perplexed look on his face that Montoya would not hang around and do this last interview and proceeds to rip Montoya and NASCAR.
There are a lot of stories of guys in different professions that know how to,” turn it on when the camera is on.” I really do think about how many of these guys are as genuine as they want to come across. A lot of people dislike Kyle Busch because of his driving style, but I have heard he is one of the nicest people away from the track. There are numerous stories about different people and how they really are, but stories such as this regarding Montoya and the video evidence really make me think more about how genuine these guys really are. Everyone has bad days, and maybe that is all Montoya was having this day, but it sure seems more than that.
Guys and Girls have to realize this not only hurts their image, but the team and the sports’ image also. The NFL has a personal conduct policy in effect for this very thing. In a sport that is going thru some difficult times attracting and maintaining sponsors, I can not imagine NASCAR or Ganassi are very happy with this behavior. Sponsors do not want to develop marketing plans around someone and have them do something idiotic, especially when it gets caught on film. The five minutes he could have used here and taken one for the team by staying for the last interview, how long will it take him to repair or rebuild that relationship with those fans he alienated by no doing so? I hope what ever he had to get to was well worth it.
