When I began doing this blog, I was told I could write about anything. Men’s Tennis is one of those things I thought I would write about…..maybe never. Sunday morning, I got sucked in to the Roger Federer-Andy Roddick final at Wimbledon. Wimbledon, to me, is to tennis what Augusta National is to golf. The people at both locations understand what they are witnessing and seem to have a genuine appreciation of the players and atmosphere in each locale. The last time I watched an entire final at Wimbledon was probably back when Andre Agassi won another 5 set thriller in 1992. I was amazed at the performance these gentlemen put on this past weekend. A 16-14 5th set gave Federer his 15th major. I started to get slightly annoyed with the broadcast team bragging about Roddick’s serve and how Federer could not break it. It reminded me of when broadcaster’s talk about a guy having not missed a free throw in his last 90 attempts, or a guy has not missed a putt inside 8 feet all weekend; we all know what happens next…you miss your next attempt. They bragged about how Roddick had not been broken all match. Roddick’s game has come a long way and hopefully he wins a tennis major soon.
Notes from the week
· Tony Stewart says he has spoken to Kyle Busch and they are on the same page regarding the final lap incident Saturday evening. The rest of the race was quite boring. I have come to expect some major incident on the last laps at Daytona and Talladega.
· Why was Manny Ramirez given Sunday off after coming back Friday from a 50-game suspension?
· Tiger Woods won his own tournament in Washington D.C. I am still shocked how players in his group on Sunday’s fold like lawn chairs. I really like Anthony Kim and thought he could challenge him when the opportunity was presented. Maybe there is something to the saying you have to lose one, before you can win one.
· Speaking of winning, Mr. Lance Armstrong is lurking at the Tour de France. I would love to see the most tested man in sports, win another one.
· Tennis and Cycling in one blog….Must be July!!!
